Bread + Elements

I just wanted to share some thoughts I had about bread and it’s relationship with the elements

What … you mean how it gets wet in the rain?

No I don’t mean the weather :o ) I mean the elements, Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Spirit

Yep that’s right, witchcraft type elements ;o)

What do they have to do with BREAD?

In my opinion lots … and obviously this is my blog so this is my opinion :o )

But how did I come to this opinion … well as I was driving along my thoughts drifting as they do I was thinking about the next festival on the wheel of the year, Lammas or Lughnasadh

anyhoooo the thoughts I had as I was driving drifted towards bread, how pagans use bread in ritual. I was thinking of Oakleaf Camp (it’s less than 7 weeks away) and last year in the ritual held in the stone circle bread was passed around. From there I went to the elements and I was thinking that bread was a good representative of Earth being as it is made of wheat grown in the earth.

Then I thought some more … no, bread isn’t just about Earth! Yes Earth produces the grain but Water is used to make bread, Air comes into it when the dough rises and of course Fire is used to cook dough turning it into the Bread which we eat to help sustain our Spirit. So bread is the essence of ALL five elements, no wonder it’s used in rituals both pagan and christian!

Those are my thoughts … what are yours?

  1. I think this was a cracking good read, and I agree with you completely. Bread is a perfect key to understanding the premise that the Elements of old, long scorned by science, were and are, in fact, effective ways of getting across to both children and adults the way the world, all its, well, elements, are interconnected and, more, essential to one another and, if found in balance, capable of feeding us physically and spiritually.

A wonderful piece of writing, Willow. You darn well ought to cross-post it to the Moot website. It’s been needing someone to write a new entry thereon for some time. What better than this? x

  2. [...] has written a fantastic blog entry all about bread and its relations to the Elements, by which I mean Earth, Water, Wind and Fire (though I also include Spirit as the fifth in ritual [...]

  3. Ha! That’s great! No wonder I like bread so much.

  4. Makes a lot of sense to me – as you say it is not surprising it is the focus of many religious rituals.

  5. Hi Nicola, yep that’s what I thought too :o )

  6. Thank you Spicy, I am honoured to be considered a creme de blogger *blush* and I have cross-posted it to the Moot as you suggested :o )
